The Gloucester County Sesquicentennial Civil War Committee Announces the Commemoration of the African American's Fight for their own Freedom Print E-mail

The Gloucester County Sesquicentennial Civil War Committee is pleased to announce theAAFFOut Commemoration of the African American’s Fight for their own Freedom Saturday September 24th, 2011 historic Gloucester Courthouse Circle from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

AAFFInThis historical event will present the struggles and accomplishments by African Americans leading up to and during the Civil War. Reenactors will portray Thomas Morris Chester, the only black news correspondent, The Robert Smalls Squadron, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation as read by Frederick Douglass and much more. The program will include period spirituals sung by local church choirs, Black Union Troop reenactors will demonstrate, drills, drum lines and musket firings, closing ceremonies will include laying of wreaths.
