Virginia Historical Society News Print E-mail

As many of you know, the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War  has planned programs and activities to commemorate the 150th anniversary of that bloody conflict.  The Virginia Historical Society has been working with the commission on many of the projects, most notably An American Turning Point: The Civil War in Virginia , an exhibition on display in the VHS museum until December 30.  In addition to working with the VHS, the commission is partnering with the Library of Virginia on the Civil War 150 Legacy Project .  This program identifies and locates original source materials that are related to the Civil War and emancipation in Virginia.  Teams of archivists travel to sites across the state to scan privately held manusript material for inclusion on both the Library of Virginia and the commission web sites.  The VHS is hosting a Civil War 150 Legacy Project scanning event on Saturday, September 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  I hope that you will check your family collections for letters, memiors, pension materials, military passes, discharge papers, diaries, and hand-drawn maps that reflect social, political, military, business, and religious life in Virginia around the time of the Civil War/  Reservations are required for this special one-time-only event.
