The first lecture takes place September 21, and features Civil War historian and author John Quarstein.
Each year the Virginia Historical Society offers three major evening lectures for our members: the Alexander W. Weddell Trustees Lecture, the Stuart G. Christian, Jr., Lecture, and the J. Harvie Wilkinson, Jr., Lecture. At these events, we have been honored to host well-known public figures such as David McCullough, Scott Berg, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ken Burns, Cokie Roberts, Frank Deford, and Sandra Day O'Connor.
This year, we can add the Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture to the list of our annual events.
Hazel and Fulton Chauncey were long-time VHS members and supporters who had a special interest in VHS programs. Their sons, Edwin H. Chauncey and Warren F. Chauncey, established this lecture series, which is open to everyone, to encourage an appreciation and understanding of the past that we all share.
The first annual Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture will be presented by award-winning author, preservationist, and historian John V. Quarstein. On Wednesday, September 21, 2011, he will speak about his book The Battle of the Ironclads which explores the most significant naval event of the American Civil War.
The Chauncey lecture takes place at the Virginia Historical Society at 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for VHS members and students. Unlike other VHS evening lectures, this event is open to the public. Tickets for nonmembers cost $15. A light reception and book signing will take place after the talk.
I expect and know that you will help the VHS make this lecture series just as popular as all of our others. I encourage you to purchase your tickets very soon through the VHS website .
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 21, at 5:30 p.m. for the first annual Hazel and Fulton Chauncey Lecture.
