The Garden Club of Mathews is hosting its 81st Annual Flower Show on Friday, May 20 from 1-4 pm and Saturday, May 21 from 9:30am-2 pm. The location is changed to Kingston Parish Hall to accommodate an expanded show, including eight artistic design classes, horticultural exhibits and memorial arrangements. Formal judging will be completed Friday morning with the show opening to the public at 1:00 pm. This year a "People's Choice Award" will be determined by simple majority of votes cast by the public during show hours. The winner will be announced at the close of the Flower Show at 2pm on Saturday. Nina Allen, co-chair of the Flower Show, encourages people to "vote for the arrangement that you like best."
This year's theme is "The Music of Our Lives." Arrangements will be inspired by familiar songs such as "Blue Hawaii," "Ode to Joy," "American the Beautiful," "Tea for Two," "Little Things Mean a Lot," "Red Sails in the Sunset," "Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water," and "Falling in Love Again." Martha Anne King, co-chair of the Flower Show, explained that "In addition to the familiar display or arrangements in a niche, this year's show will have table arragements, and pedestal displays. Each arragement will have accompanying cards identifying all material used as well as the inspiration or idea behind the design, its symbolism, or why colors or flowers were selected." Posters will explain the guidelines used by the arrangers to help the public understand the concepts and design principles used. Club members will be on hand to answer questions.
A horticultural educational display will present flowers grown by Garden Club members in their own gardens. The intent is to prove which flowers thrive in Mathews County. Each entry will be identified by common name, botanical name with cultivar (when known), and preferred growing conditions (sun/shade, wet/dry, etc.) This information is intended to be instructional for visitors.
The Flower Show Committee has been planning and working since October 2010. Besides the co-chairs, committee members are Naomi Sutton, Ann Billups, Pat Chadwell, Mary Furniss, Mildred Hudgins, MaryAnn Hubbard, Tuggie Hutson, Joan Keith, Debbie Lambert, Chris Landis, Marga Peltcher, Darlene Talbot, Helene Watts and Sylvia Woodcock.
