The 36th annual Mathews Market Days Festival is held each year on the Friday and Saturday following Labor Day. A centerpiece of the festival is the official Market Days Poster – a limited edition, signed, numbered, collectible art print. The first art print was created in 1990 by Catherine Venable. In 1995 the process was transformed into a “competition” and has since been drawing some of the area’s best, and newest, artists – the 2008 winning entry was submitted by Emmaline Blake, a then 9 year old Mathews resident and aspiring artist. All of the winning posters are on display at the Mathews County Visitor & Information Center, housed in Sibley’s General Store. Applications to participate in the contest are due April 1, 2011, and are now available at the Mathews Art Group/The Gallery, The Bay School Cultural Arts Center, Mathews County Visitor & Information Center, Mathews Memorial Library, and the Mathews Extension Office. Artwork entry deadline is July 1. The poster contest is open to all ages and levels of expertise; you need not live in Mathews County to enter and there is no limit to the number of entries submitted by an individual. All mediums (watercolor, oil, acrylic, etc.), collages or mixed media are accepted. The 2011 theme is “A Treasure of Mathews,” directing focus to a single point of interest— Mathews’ history, the Market Days festival, or life in the Mathews community. The winning artist will receive a $500 prize plus ten posters. The winning entry will be announced at an unveiling reception, an event open to the public, on August 21, 2011. All contest entries will be on display at the Mathews Memorial Library from August 21–September 10, 2011. Additional specifications and requirements are detailed on the Application.
