Novel Imagines Deadly Secret Lurking Along Banks of the Great Wicomico River
Written by Sarah Wilson

Great_River_COVER_288The Great River Disclosure begins with mysterious events in South America and Utah, but most of it takes place in Virginia, along the banks of the Great Wicomico River. In the world of this suspenseful thriller, by first time novelist Larry Holcombe, the tranquil Great River Resort is the perfect front for a top secret government facility known only to the President, high ranking government and military officials, and resort owner Bill Russell. Retired Navy SEAL Ted Carter works as resort CEO and golf coach. As the action accelerates, Bill Russell, Ted, and Ted’s fiance find themselves in the middle of a deadly confrontation between the White House and the military industrial complex.

Holcombe is a born story teller. He says that when he was in school, he “loved to tell tall tales to friends.”  His friends mentioned his talent to their teacher. The teacher had Holcombe tell the class a story. Impressed, she called his mother that night to express her amazement at his skill. In addition to his natural narrative talent, Holcombe credits his life long love of reading with his desire to write a novel. He thinks anyone who finds that reading comes to them naturally, “at some point wants to take pen to paper or fingers to word processor and see what they can turn out.”

Given his story telling prowess and interest in reading, it’s no surprise that Holcombe eventually devoted himself to writing a novel. Since he always liked thrillers, he decided to write in that genre. “I wanted to write a thriller, so I needed a plot...that was a bit difficult.”  He wanted to write something with a twist, something involving an idea he hadn’t found worked into a thriller before, so he searched for a unique subject he could use. The search led him to an interest he developed in high school. In the late 50s, Holcombe came across some books by Major Donald E. Keyhoe. The books made the case that the government was aware of extraterrestrial life, but was concealing it from the public. Holcombe was fascinated by the idea and the research and has continued to follow it ever since. He thought, “This is the perfect thing to use as a subplot.”  It was something new and something he knew. “It’s not about flying saucers. It’s a murder mystery. It just uses that as a vehicle,” he says of his plot.

When creating the Great River Resort, where much of the book’s action takes place, Holcombe had a specific location in mind. He used to live along Ball’s Creek, which flows into the Wicomico River. During one of his frequent boat trips past the confluence of creek and river, he noticed a piece of land for sale. He always thought, “What a marvelous place for a resort.”  Since he’d often imagined building one there, it was a natural location to pick for his imaginary resort.

“A stickler for accuracy,” Holcombe wanted to make sure his book, which describes some technical concepts and equipment, was factually correct. He sought the input of his personal friend, retired Air Force Colonel John K. Wilson. If Wilson didn’t know the answers to questions about technical aspects of the military and aviation, he could find them. Holcombe also consulted, via email, with Stanton Friedman, who has been at the forefront of U.F.O. study for many years. Holcombe made some changes to the story based on Friedman’s input.

Fans of The Great River Disclosure will be excited to know Holcombe is finished with Satan’s Angel, which follows the story of one of the characters who initially appears in The Great River Disclosure. He’s currently hard at work editing the second book and has begun writing a third book to round out a “Disclosure Trilogy.” pl
